Making Country His Way

"Jack is a great singer, born entertainer and an all ‘round top bloke" Amber Lawrence

Mackay’s Jack McDougall has notched up plenty of accolades in his burgeoning career, with the latest being a No. 1 spot on the iTunes Country Charts.

Jack’s musical path had an unusual beginning with a chance meeting at the local music store began his country journey, which he continues to chase on his own terms.

At just 21, Jack has worked in jobs ranging from being the Charters Towers town crier to a McDonald’s server and is already an established singer-songwriter, releasing two singles, with the latest, Negativity, hitting No. 1 on iTunes on release day, May 15.

His debut single, Let Me Out, hit iTunes at No. 3 on the Country Songs Chart and the top 40 of the All Genres Songs Chart.

Jack has graduated from both the junior and senior courses of the CMAA Academy of Country Music where he gained firsthand experience of the music industry, being mentored by Australian country music royalty such as Lyn Bowtell, Kasey Chambers and more.

“Going to The Academy really introduced me to a whole new world of music, musicians and more people in the industry,” he said.

“I still talk to those people and Fanny Lumsden, Lyn Bowtell, and Amber Lawrence have all been amazing supporters, along with Simon Johnson from Hillbilly Hut who produced and played on Jack’s debut single and upcoming EP.

“The Academy really solidified my love for the music industry.”

Drawing on his interest in independent music, Jack has been co-writing with various artists of different genres, ahead of the release of his debut EP.

He had an unconventional start to his country music career when he went to get his guitar strings replaced at his local music shop in Charters Towers and the owner suggested he enter the local country music competition. This was the start of a love affair with country music and Jack has been singing ever since.

The Sarina local attended high school in Charters Towers in a country music scene where people supported each other, shared each other’s music and success stories.

Jack’s first show was opening for Amber Lawrence and Luke O’Shea’s Golden Roads tour at Charters Towers.

The young singer-songwriter aims to play more festivals, take his music around the country and reach as many people as possible with the messages in the songs.

Taking steps towards this goal, Jack hit the road across two weeks from Bundaberg to Mareeba for intimate shows in funky venues in 2019.

Jack’s biggest aim is to connect with as many people as he can through playing his music.
